The Minimalist Infant Registry Checklist

Putting together your baby registry is nix if not overwhelming.

There are over sixty,000 options on Amazon.com alone.

minimalist.jpg

You already know yous don't need everything marketed to parentshoped-for.

feather your nest?

Equally soon as y'all enter the earth of, say, the "baby" category on Amazon, y'all're bombarded with things you may have never even considered, along with marketing messages preying on your fears and concern for your baby'southward wellbeing.

Later all, throughout pregnancy, you're biologically primed to "plumage your nest" with anything and everything you may need to keep your baby safe and comfortable.

Plus, you may have conversations with other well-significant parents in which they mention things you lot never even though about, things like "pee-pee tents," and "diaper genies."

(Scroll down to see the "What to Skip" list for more on this.)

Having been at that place, washed that, twice (and come out on the other side with a vi year sometime and a i year sometime) I can tell yous definitively that you don't demand most of what is suggested.

Hither's what nosotros did

My husband and I created our minimalist babe registry 6 years ago for our first baby. We were planning to continue our depression-stuff nomadic lifestyle, and so everything we purchased needed to travel with us or exist easy to pass along when nosotros were done with information technology.

I'll share the results of hours of pre-purchase research and road testing. I have recently updated this list with what I've learned years downwardly the route, including what I did the same — and differently — for babe #2.

THE ESSENTIALS.jpg

Who it's for

The checklist will exist helpful for you or whatever friends or family members you lot accept who are expecting a babe and are on a budget or living a minimalist or low-ataxia lifestyle.

Traveling with a babe

This list will also be helpful for nomadic families or travel lovers who don't want to give up those weekend getaways and vacations abroad just because they are having baby. If you travel frequently, information technology's of import for your baby's comfort (and your own!) that you lot can hands create a similar surround on the road every bit the one at abode. Therefore, you don't desire besides many specialty items at dwelling that you tin't easily take with you to exist part of your babe'south daily routine.

fourth dimension range covered

The list is intended to provide for newborns and babies up to 6 months one-time, simply many things will serve long past that 6-calendar month mark.

ane. The sleeping state of affairs: a play m with mattress, protector, and 3 fitted sheets

graco.PNG

We use a portable play yard for a prophylactic and comfy place for our baby to sleep all the time. No crib. Our version from Graco (non an affiliate link) came with a removable bassinet that hangs inside it and can be used in the early months for sleeping.

Once he passed the weight limit (listed on the production), we removed the upper bassinet and he sleeps in the bottom, an on additional mattress purchased separately. It's fine for babies to sleep on the sparse mattress that comes with the play yard, but I wanted something a flake thicker on top of that for every twenty-four hour period sleeping. Make sure the mattress fits very snugly so you don't have gaps between the mattress and the sides of the bed. Go fitted sheets that fit your play yard added mattress.

If I were going to be in the aforementioned place for years, I might buy a traditional crib, but a foldable play yard is a great selection for full-fourth dimension sleeping for united states of america. It travels well, and our first baby slept well when nosotros traveled since it was the same environment he was in at home. Now it'southward the same with our second baby.

A play yard is also light in weight and has two wheels, so it can easily be dragged into some other room, if say, you want to grab upwards on your e-mail while the baby naps next to you in your office space. I did this for a while back when our baby was napping in a unlike room than where he sleeps in at night.

2. Babe carrier for baby wearing

I made a decision to avoid strollers for the first iv months and I'd make the same decision again. Having only the carrier was not bad for bonding with my baby, gaining force, and losing the pregnancy weight. But mostly it's nigh bonding with baby and keeping that little cherub'due south ear right on your heartbeat, pare to skin, equally frequently as possible.

There are a lot of options, so here I've saved you the hassle of looking through every one. It's really important to get one that suits newborn up to xl pounds and that you can choose from lots of placement options. Meaning yous'll want to have the option do front in-facing comport, front forrad-facing carry, rear frontward-facing carry (backpack style), and side hip comport.

I bought an Ergobaby first, merely later on replaced information technology with the EVEN more adjustable and ergonomic LILLEbaby. I felt a chip fooled by Ergobaby into buying a special babe insert that I then had to store, unused, because he chop-chop grew out of information technology. I couldn't donate information technology considering it's such a specific piece. Also, the 1 I bought couldn't exercise front forwards-facing carry. Turns out they have one that does it all, I simply bought the wrong one.

The LILLEbaby doesn't require any extra accessories. There's a strap inside that easily folds abroad when you don't need it; you put a folded blanket over the strap to back up your newborn. (You could do this with Ergobaby merely LILLEbaby really suggests it instead of offering a pricey insert that will only last a couple months).

lille.PNG

The LILLEbaby also has other advantages over Ergobaby, including a few modest merely very thoughtful blueprint improvements, such as a pad to protect your breast from the front strap when doing a haversack style carry. Overall, my sense was that the LILLEbaby designers care more than virtually moms and dads because the production is slightly more adjustable, a touch ameliorate designed. And merely a piddling meliorate makes all the departure.

One more mistake you lot tin can avert considering I made it for you: purchase 1 that is 100% cotton, and avoid options listed as "airflow" fabric. Information technology simply isn't. That layered mesh material is harsher against babe'due south skin, and the tiny holes grab whatever curd-textured effluvia, including cotton cheese, poop, and throw-up, locking them deep in the fibers where they are hard to wash out. Yeah, I know this from personal experience. Look closely at the photos as they change and update often. Despite my mistake, I totally love my LILLEbaby. Heartily recommended.

3. Automobile seat

Always a must. And please, please, get 1 that is easy to uninstall and reinstall. Peculiarly if you travel a lot.

You may want to become one that is office of a travel (stroller) system. See beneath for a recommendation on a stroller travel system.

four. Stroller

We didn't get a stroller until our baby was more than 4 months former. When we did purchase a stroller, we got away with a nice umbrella stroller.

Afterward, I bought a used BOB running stroller which I accept mixed feelings about. (The feelings: they are not allowed in airports due to their large size, merely that size is useful sometimes for protection in a crowd, and it's certainly nice to run with your infant, but on the other hand, running is important lonely fourth dimension if yous tin get a sitter, friend, or partner to care for your baby while yous take care of yourself.)

If you want to make a travel system stroller part of your registry, someone I trust just did a whole lot of research and settled on an UPPAbaby travel system which works from newborn up to preschool age and includes a car seat. It's a pricey option simply you may be able to clasp it into the budget since you're going quality over quantity as a minimalist. it is really squeamish to have a system that works seamlessly.

For baby #2 I was gifted a pre-loved travel system and I take really enjoyed it.

five. Video or audio monitor

This was not on my original list and I regret information technology. I spent too much fourth dimension broken-hearted nigh my baby when he was napping. I didn't accept a mode to check him without going into his room, which would potentially wake him up. I'd recommend a video monitor so you can practice a quick visual check every time your "mommy feet" kicks in.

However, I've heard that information technology's all-time to avoid the monitors that go with you when yous're running errands or on a date night. Go someone yous trust to watch over your baby, and trust them. Otherwise you'll be on the monitor the whole fourth dimension y'all're out.

1st Update - And so far I have NOT used a monitor with my second babe. We'll see if that changes. This listing is an ongoing experiment. I think what I've learned is I have less anxiety baby #2.

2nd Update - I've come to the conclusion that a babe monitor is not necessary if you are depression feet (anxiety may be lower with a second baby) and live in a home where you can hear your baby weep from any room. Those of yous with higher anxiety and/or a big or soundproof home may want a audio or video monitor and so yous can hear or see when you baby wakes upwardly from a nap or at nighttime if you're non room-sharing.

6. Diapers and wipes

We started with size newborn diapers and we had to size up about once a month, and so don't buy too many. Those petty bums grow fast! We used about 100 per month in general, and maybe more than those offset couple months when we changed him more oftentimes than was necessary since we were learning his habits (and the amazing capacity of diapers). We used dispensable.

For baby #two, we're using disposable diapers and material diapers. I use disposable when it'southward easier (traveling, night time, and out of the house) and fabric diapers occasionally — around the house or when I want to continue a few diapers out of the landfill and save some money.

I bought a few 2d-hand cloth diapers from a friend whose kids are all now potty trained. I plant that information technology wasn't quite enough. They were a few different brands, and some had Velcro that had worn out, so I couldn't use all of them.

So, for the last four months, I've been testing these Alva Baby material diapers with my second kid. And I really like them. I like that they come up in a set, and they are like shooting fish in a barrel to clean. The merely thing I'd change about the Alvas is I wish they had claw and middle (Velcro) closure. The snaps take about i.five seconds each to shut, and there are 3 on each side. 1 of the other brands I have (pre-owned) has a hook and eye closure that takes about one 2nd on each side. Two seconds vs nine seconds to shut upwards a fresh diaper may non seem like a lot, but when your baby is wiggly and eager to get back to exploring, it is a long time.

I'll go along using the well-rated ones I have, linked above, merely if I were to do it over once again, I might attempt something like the Bambino Mio Onesize, although they are significantly more expensive. Update: At about fifteen months my trivial one figured out how to disengage the Velcro on our one hook-and-eye cloth diaper, and so at present I say, stick with the strong snaps of the Alva Baby diapers .

seven. White noise machine

We love this this white noise machine. It's small and portable. It has lasted us for years. We used the one machine with both babies and it is nonetheless going strong, v years later. It has helped me become great sleep in a city hotel under construction. It helps our kids sleep while we're watching Netflix. Highly recommended.

8. Like shooting fish in a barrel article of clothing

Sometimes I recollect the designers of baby wearing apparel don't actually have children themselves. I was shocked by how hard many baby apparel are to use. Seriously. I get sweaty just dressing my baby. This is an area that a good designer needs to have on.

In the meantime, buy a few onesies, rompers, pants, soft hats, and socks. Make sure everything is soft. Your friends are: zippers and minimal snaps. Your enemies are: buttons and too many snaps. Also, easy access to the diaper area is cardinal. Kids grow really fast (and in spurts) so clothing is a buy-as-needed expanse.

Update: My sister introduced to me to this brand and I dear it. They are the easiest and cutest organic baby clothes I have discovered so far. The two-way zipper on the romper makes diaper changes easier.

9. Large washable underpads (4)

I didn't know these existed until I went to the infirmary to give birth. And then nosotros sort of not exactly accidentally stole ane from the infirmary. (It was my bed pad giving me a lilliputian actress security of not staining the sheets during recovery. ) When I chosen the infirmary to confess our criminal offence, they told me, understandably, to just keep information technology.

It has been amazing for so many things. For changing diapers on, we simply placed it on the floor or bed and changed the infant in that location. We'd throw information technology in the washer and dryer and it would e'er come out clean and like new. Oh, it's also skilful for stomach time. It travels well too, folding up to the size of a calorie-free jacket. Now it doubles as a "in example" pad under our older child'southward sheets for night potty preparation. We bought more to utilise for our new babe.

It'southward probable the hospital sourced it from a medical supply company. Nonetheless, I retrieve I constitute it on Amazon for yous. Check out this 4-pack. AMAZING. Too adept for pets? What? How many uses does this production have? And they are SO washable.

ten. Packaged snacks stashes and (very specific ) h2o cups with lids. (for you, breastfeeding mom)

Those first few weeks of breastfeeding were tough. When I'd finally go my baby latched on, I'd settle back into the chair, couch, or bed, and immediately get hit with undeniable, dying-in-the-desert thirst along with hunger pangs. Just I couldn't move because that would disrupt the latch we'd just worked and then hard for. So unremarkably I'd yell for my husband to bring me water and snacks. Simply sometimes he couldn't hear me or wasn't home.

So hide PACKAGED SNACKS effectually your house. Earlier you lot go into labor, put them nether your mattress, betwixt couch cushions, within of decorative pottery, EVERYWHERE !

And y'all'll commonly but have one mitt bachelor, then don't sit downward with a bottle of water. (I can't open a canteen of h2o with one hand. Just me?) And don't sit down down with an open top cup because like me, you might be impuissant from slumber deprivation and that h2o will spill. Yous demand a jumbo loving cup with a chapeau and straw.

When infant is hungry, first fill your loving cup. Literally. You lot won't want to, because when your baby is crying all y'all can call back about is making your baby experience ameliorate, but learn from my experience, delight, so you don't spend that precious breastfeeding time feeling thirsty and deprived.

11. Breast pump

In some places your insurance company is required by law to provide one to you. This is vital to have before the baby comes, as you'll want to have it on hand during those first few days and weeks of learning how to breastfeed – when you're engorged and the infant hasn't learned how to effectively nurse on a very full chest.

(Again, larn from my mistakes. My pump hadn't yet arrived I was 1 udderly miserable dairy queen that first week. I had to bring a specialist in to assistance me go the milk to come up out the first time. A pump would have solved the trouble in a few seconds.)

When my pump finally arrived, I loved it. Yous want to go for a "hospital class" machine. While I didn't try other pumps, (so I can't compare it to others) I do highly recommend the one I chose from my insurance company's offerings. I gave it away after the outset infant and purchased a new one for the second. It is available on Amazon here.

12. 2-4 bottles with nipples for pumped breast milk

If you lot're going back to work full fourth dimension, and plan to pump, yous may need a cooler and more than 4 bottles.

All the same, for starters, 2-4 bottles should be fine until y'all get a experience for things.

If you become the to a higher place recommended chest pump, information technology comes with two bottles. Yous can too register for this bundle which comes with iv bottles and a tote bag.

xiii. Bottle brush for cleaning bottles and nipples

Specialized babe bottle brushes come with a larger brush for inside the bottle and a smaller part for cleaning nipples.

14. Breast milk freezer bags

It'southward squeamish to have special bags that look different than regular freezer storage bags. Chest milk bags are tall and narrow, making them easier to pour into a canteen than your standard zip lock bags.

fifteen. 4-10 lightweight swaddling blankets

These are for swaddling and burping and cleaning random baby messes. These won't last long for swaddling but will be vital for many months for those sudden spills that come out of babies.

sixteen. Sleep sacks

The swaddling days don't last long for most babies, and blankets get kicked off or go chancy. Get several sleep sacks for chilly nights when your infant'due south sleepwear won't provide enough warmth on its own.

As a bonus, a sleep sack keeps the child safe in bed subsequently that age (about a yr) when they start trying to put a leg over the edge of the bed to climb out.

17. Baby soap or wash

I haven't formed a preference for one particular baby wash. I tend to buy something locally that seems every bit mild, gentle, and natural every bit possible.

eighteen. Something for sore nipples

Lanolin is the recommended product. I tried it, merely then switched to coconut oil. I prefer the smell, and that information technology's from a institute rather than an beast. And it seems to heal my pare fast. Whatever you choose, have it on hand before you give birth because sore nipples are as bad every bit they sound.

19. Infant oil/moisturizer

I prefer a natural establish oil like olive, kokosnoot, almond, or jojoba. These seemed to exercise the job only as well equally a foam specifically branded for babies. Moisturizers marketed to parents for babies tend to take long ingredient listings. It seems simpler and healthier to me to put 1 ingredient at a time on your baby.

20. Diaper rash cream (a tube per calendar month)

If you are lucky, your babe will answer well to coconut oil to heal and foreclose diaper rash, thus items # eighteen, 19, and 20 tin can all be covered with a jar or two of organic kokosnoot oil. For our showtime baby, coconut oil concluded up existence more effective than the leading diaper rash cream, if a fleck messier. Information technology smelled improve too!

21. Pacifier (perchance a couple with different types of nipples for baby to try)

I remember being worried that giving my outset son a pacifier would brand him addicted to it, or misfile him and go far more difficult for him to breastfeed. If I recollect correctly, I tried a pacifier after he'd learned to latch on to the chest. And and then it made my life so much easier. At some point around 7 or viii months old he started dropping the pacifier out of his rima oris ofttimes and I took that as a cue that he was done with it. In that location were a few days of adjustment but and then he no longer missed it. Same with my second babe.

We used the ever-popular Philips Avent Soothie pacifiers. I think someone gifted us the i attached to a plush toy brute, and that was a big hit because it was hard to lose and gave our baby something to concord onto.

22. Super seat/stuck seat

The gist is: somewhere yous can stick your kid nearby and you know they're safe and occupied while y'all take a shower. It's a peace of mind thing.

We started using the super seat once infant could hold his caput upward on his ain. Our version was called a super seat because it is a supportive chair, a booster seat, a snack tray, and a toy-holder all in one. Later, he used the booster office in identify of a high chair. It came with straps to safely attach to a regular kitchen chair.

We bought something very similar to this (same make, unlike toy theme). All the same, were I to do it over again, I'd probably attempt to detect 1 with higher ratings. There were a few buggy things that could be meliorate. I don't think toys need to be attached. Babies chop-chop tire of the attached toys and want to play with something else (see below section on skipping toys). Also, over time the hard-to-clean toys get undeniably… gunky.

23. A napper or co-sleeper.

It's nice to have something prophylactic you tin put your baby downwards in when you desire them napping nigh you, just you lot don't want to put them in a crib or drag a play m to your space. They'll chop-chop abound out of a napper, so make it affordable or get information technology pre-owned. In Finland they employ a cardboard box! Information technology really but needs to be a flat, rubber, comfy place for your baby to sleep. Exercise your research and go something that suits your lifestyle and parenting style. Ukraine, where I had my second baby, has started doing the same thing Republic of finland does, giving new parents a large box filled with new baby essentials. The box doubles as a crib and includes a sparse cream mattress; I used the box the hospital gave us for that purpose in the very early on weeks when I wanted my picayune one to nap nearby.

24. Forehead thermometer

I had to pick up one of these in a hurry after our son was born. Although the hospital really gave us a thermometer in a baby souvenir pack, information technology was a standard insertion thermometer.

An insertion thermometer is the terminal thing your infant wants to deal with when she or he is feeling sick. And I can't blame a baby for not wanting cold metal stuck in whatever orifice, at whatever time, sick or healthy. So I found myself delaying taking my son'south temperature when I suspected he had a fever. As soon as we got a brow thermometer my parental anxiety decreased quite a fleck as it fabricated taking his temperature, and normally finding out there was no fever, easy.

I purchased mine in a CVS store, just if you lot, wise planner that you are, want to put one on an Amazon Registry, here'south a suggestion.

25. Infant Move Monitor

I nearly left this one off the list. It had a trend to slip off my baby'southward diaper, which meant that in that location were a few fake alarms that had me upwards in the heart of the nighttime, heart racing, earlier I checked on him and saw he was fine.

However. Concluding night I had a vivid dream taking me dorsum to those early on days of caring for my newborn. I call up how hard it was to really get restful sleep considering I was worried he would terminate breathing in the middle of the night. And so this detail is going back on the listing.

I should also tell yous I didn't suffer from anxiety earlier having a babe. Parenthood changes you in unpredictable ways, and for me there was a huge increase in anxiety.

So my final verdict is that if this device (nosotros bought twice, in one case for each babe, and recommend the Snuza Hero Baby Movement Monitor) will assist yous have peace of listen so you can snatch some good slumber when your baby is sleeping, go it.

I think it's worth information technology in those very early on weeks if you lot accept a little feet or tend to wake up at night just to cheque that your babe'due south breathing is fine. (Which, only FYI, is normal new parent behavior.)

What to skip

Now that y'all know the 25 essentials, here'southward what you can save your money on.

ane. Toys

Babies are entertained easily. Crinkling paper. A spoon. Their own ear. Toys are really non necessary until after. Plus you'll unavoidably collect toys as gifts because they are fun for friends and family to buy for you.

ii. Specialized baby moisturizers

As I suggested before, these tin can contain nasty chemicals. Just stick with pure plant oils like coconut, olive, and jojoba. Always check your infant for signs of an allergic reaction when putting something new on their skin.

3. High chair

I never understood high chairs. They're huge. Why buy such a large thing when you can get a small-scale booster seat and the babe can sit with the family at the tabular array? Plus their summit, college than a normal chair, means a fall would be more dangerous. And, here's a parenting secret no one talks about: every babe falls. There's gonna exist a fall. All you can exercise is your best. But they're gonna fall. Make certain it's from as low a point as possible.

iv. A changing table

A huge piece of unnecessary furniture. Also a falling chance. Floor or bed changes are easy and safer. Never walk away from your baby when they could roll off the bed or coil into a dangerous situation.

5. Pee pee tent

Warning: if yous accept a male child, he might pee on you when you modify his diaper. Pee pee tents are fiddling tents yous put over his penis during that brief window of risk while you change his diaper. Just put your hand over the stream so it doesn't hitting your face up. Otherwise, permit the guy get some airflow during diaper changes.

6. Wipes warmer

Nope. Become used to the refreshing coolness of wipes in their natural state, kid.

7. Diaper genie

Just put those dingy diapers in a bag and necktie it off. Perchance become a trash tin with a chapeau if the smell is actually bad. You lot don't need a specialty trash can (with moving parts liable to interruption and specialty supplies to be purchased at regular intervals).

eight. Anything with buttons or beads

Buttons on clothes accept likewise much fourth dimension and tin pop off and become a choking take a chance. Beads, which can also become a choking hazard, are by and large apparently avoided for babies. However, I've noticed a trend of making babies vesture a necklace of bister beads for supposed pain-relieving benefits. Bister may be soothing to look at or touch, but has no other helpful benefits when worn, and your baby will be safer without the potential choking and strangulation hazard of wearing a necklace.

9. Complicated wraps for baby wearing

Don't buy annihilation that needs a tutor, class or more than one person to put on. Just go with one babe wearing product. The already-mentioned easy, highly adaptable, works-for-mom-and-dad LILLEbaby.

x. Crib accessories

Some crib accessories like bumper pads can put infant at risk.

Other accessories to avert include those low-cal upwardly, large, plastic things that play lullabies and have colorful visuals and ordinarily attach to the side of a crib. Call back that whatever becomes part of your babe's going-to-sleep ritual must exist repeated every single night and nap, sometimes for years.

Y'all really don't want annihilation that is so specific that information technology can't be easily replaced or repeated. You likely wouldn't travel with the light-upward plastic thing, and so I'd recommend skipping it if you desire to travel easily with your baby.

11. Canteen/pacifier sterilizer.

Buy things that are dishwasher safe or clean them with hot soapy water and a specialized brush like the one recommended above. Over-sterilizing may rob your baby of a good for you microbiota.

12. Infant bathroom tub.

You don't need a bathtub or special insert for your baby. They may make things a bit easier, but they may also increase the risk to your baby by calculation a imitation sense of safety when your infant is in the bath. Use the kitchen or bathroom sink (sanitized get-go, of grade) to bathe your baby. Never exit them unattended, even for a moment, and always go on their face out of the h2o. Utilize a cloth or wipes for cleaning the face. In the early days, babies do not need frequent baths, and can exist wiped downwardly with a warm, damp cloth. In one case they tin can sit unaided, you lot can let your baby sit in a very shallow tub to bathe, or even have baths with them.

Bonus, babies getting sink baths are so sinkin' cute. Seriously, I cartel you lot to get search #sinkbath on Instagram. Bad day? It merely got improve.

13. And... everything else non on the in a higher place list of essentials.

That's correct, you don't demand special baby combs or brushes, breastfeeding pillows (which are remarkably similar to regular pillows), or any of the other 60,000 items in the Amazon baby shop alone. Stick with the 25 essentials listed on the checklist above and y'all should have everything you lot need for your baby to thrive.

That's information technology!
